Make Magazine blog posting from Thursday September 3rd on the Dub and Drone Machines. I was at the Maker Faire in May this year and met some really nice people. Hopefully next year I can do a performance. If you’ve never been you should definitely check it out.

San Diego Citybeat
To fully understand Tristan Shone’s artwork, you need to read the explainer that accompanies a piece he created for the group show SouthwestNET: Techno at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. “Aphanisis” consists of a precision drill press, built by Shone, with a syringe in place of the drill bit—a sort of sci-fi automated drug-implanting device—enclosed in a glass box.

The Drone Machines are now on display together with videos by Gretchen Mercedes until September 17th, 2009 at Compact Space Gallery in Los Angeles, CA. There will be Dub Machines (newer machines, not displayed) performance outside on the closing night of September 17th between 7 and 9pm. These are 3 new devices I have made and composed new music on.

Brand new Dub Machines device: Headgear. It’s an eight channel microphone made from stainless steel and anodized aluminum. There are eight electret condenser mics that can be used as eight separate vocal inputs and also as analog control inputs for use in ableton, Pd, max, etc.

Finally posting some fabrication and finished shots of my new device intended for dub and bass sounds.

The new dub machine, “Rails” is well under way. I’ve been using this Hurco CNC mill to do most of the fabrication. It’s an amazing piece of machinery that has really tightened up the alignment tolerances, which is sort of the focus of the new machines…that along with being lightweight. Unfortunately this machine will not be ready for
Spring Reverb this weekend (!), but for sure it will be accompanying Author & Punisher for the
May 2009 tour. I’ve also put together some sketches for a simple device that I might sell as a peripheral for a controller keyboard. I think it would be very useful for live performance…more to come on that…
