Another new series of instruments finally in the works. The one shown here was designed mainly at STEIM in Amsterdam, during my stay there in September.  There will be a few other texture based instruments to go along with this…I’m hoping for the summer 2012 for them to be done.These instruments, tentatively called Gridiron, are based upon texture and mechanical feedback.  All motions are based upon quatized, textural switching and feedback.  I am hoping for a very sawtooth and industrial sensibility this time around.  More to come.

This is the beginning of a series of voice modulating masks that for the most part will not involve any computer effects.  Some actuation will be computer controlled, but I really feel there is enough effect in the voice as it is and I would like to be able to perform acoustically with these masks worn by many musicians.  I will write some music as soon as I finish fabricating them.  Right now there 5, but more are bound to find their way in.

Featuring Tristan Shone (musician/live electronics/composer), Clint McCallum (voice/actor), David Medine (live sound and electronics), Jason Ponce (Live video processing), and Rick Snow (creator and orchestration).

Consume places two performers side by side in constant dialogue: one, an actor and vocalist with live video and audio processing who is projected as a large, almost superhuman being; the other, a musician, performing voice and live electronics on custom high tech devices. At its most basic level, Consume exists as a meditation on (among other things) the roll of technology in our lives, musical and theatrical experimentation, visual and sonic suggestion, and the idea of the audience as a consumer. The performance is as sonically and visually beautiful as it is completely overwhelming, pushing the limits of what one can consume in one sitting as an audience.

The Center for Research in Computing and the Arts (CRCA) is an interdisciplinary Organized Research Unit of UCSD that facilitates the creation of vanguard culture through artistic, scholarly, and technological research. As the University of California’s oldest arts research center, CRCA celebrates its continuing legacy of almost 40 years of leading edge research by presenting a new series, the CRCA Exchange, in conjunction with Calit2 and the UCSD 50th Anniversary.

Jaime Oliver
Jaime Oliver (PhD candidate, UCSD Music) will present his current work which “consists of music pieces for computer, sound performance and installation. Borrowing from media theory and cognitive science, his research attempts to understand how, in their historical evolution, the diverse practices of electronic and computer music have construed the concept of, and designed, musical instruments to the point of redefining the term altogether to instruments that can listen, understand, remember and respond, as well as contain composed structures and exhibit agency or independent behavior.” Jaime will present his latest projects The Silent Drum and Mano Controller.

Tristan Shone
Tristan Shone is a mechanical engineer, sculptor (MFA, UCSD, 2007), sound artist (Author & Punisher) and creator of the Drone and Dub Machines industrial sound controllers. Alongside fabricating machines and composing sound for performance, he works at the National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research (http://ncmir.ucsd.edu/) at UCSD as a mechanical engineer. He will discuss his recent “Drone/Dub Machines” fabricated in the CRCA Fabrication Lab.
